In case you haven’t noticed, frozen yogurt has become one of the hugest food trends in Richmond over the past couple of years. According to Richmond Bizsense, it all started when Sweet Frog opened it’s first location in Short Pump, swiftly followed by many other branches, and more then a few competitors. This has been happening all over the country, as frozen yogurt shops spring up everywhere, knocking old-school ice cream places out of business.

Most of these stores are pretty similar, they are decorated in a color-scheme aimed at cheerful people and preteen girls, and let the customer pick their flavor combination and toppings from the yogurt bar, and then pay by the weight of their dish, instead of forking over an arbitrary amount for a small, medium or large. Frozen yogurt is also healthier, and their is usually the option of non-fat yogurt with fruit toppings instead of sprinkles or candy.

But does this really replace old-school, soft-serve goodness or the classic flavor of a brand like Ben & Jerry’s? We aren’t sure, but we do know that the decadent-yet-healthiness of a fruity frozen yogurt dish really hits the spot after a noodle bowl and some sushi. So check out the fro-yo places popping up all over RVA, but don’t forget to sneak in a pint of Chunky Monkey or an ice cream cone every once in a while.
