Survey Closed - Thank you to all who participated in the online survey. DDOT used the survey to learn what is important to the community when considering the design of the H Street/Benning Road Car Barn Training Center (CBTC). Participants gave feedback on architectural style, landscaping, sustainability and public observation. Survey results will be made available soon.
The CBTC will serve as an operations base and maintenance facility for the H Street/Benning Road line. It will be located adjacent to Spingarn High School, at the corner of 26th St, NE and Benning Road, NE.
January 28, 2012 - Marked the 50th anniversary of the infamous day in 1962 when streetcar service ended in the District of Columbia. The Washington Post took a look back – and ahead – in a story by Ashley Halsey (Streetcars to Return Soon to the District) and DDOT published some historic streetcar photos on its Flickr Photostream.
January 2012 - The D.C. Office of Planning released its Streetcar Land Use Study which provides a comprehensive analysis of the planned 37-mile system and highlights potential benefits as well as challenges. Visit the News Room for more details.
About the Streetcar
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has started construction of a new streetcar line on H Street and Benning Road, NE that is expected to start revenue-service in the summer of 2013. Planning is also underway for additional lines across the city.
The DC Streetcar will make travel within the District much easier for residents, workers and visitors, and it will complement the existing transit options.
